Which Coyote based block should I build?
Which block suits my build's needs?
We get asked this question a lot. This post will explain the differences between the generations of blocks.
Gen 1 Blocks:
- No support around cylinder (inboard/outboard are in center of cylinder)
- 11MM head bolts unless it is/was a F-150 block. 11MM blocks are prone to cracking (pulls on intake galley area)
- Oil filter adapter location has 2 oil holes on side of block
- Bore size 3.630" utilizing a steel cylinder liner
Gen 2 Blocks:
- No support around cylinder (inboard/outboard are in center of cylinder)
- 11MM head bolts (pulls on intake galley area)
- Oil filter adapter location has 3 oil holes on side of block
- Bore size 3.630" utilizing a steel cylinder liner
Gen 3 Blocks:
- Factory support webbing added around cylinder (inboard/outboard are in center of cylinder)
- Long 12MM head bolts (pulls deeper in block by main webbing)
- Oil filter adapter location has 3 oil holes on side of block
- Added support webbing from Ford
- Bore size 3.662" utilizing a plasma coated cylinder
Gen 4 Blocks:
- Factory support webbing added around cylinder (inboard/outboard are in center of cylinder)
- Long 12MM head bolts (pulls deeper in block by main webbing)
- Oil filter adapter location has 3 oil holes on side of block
- Added support webbing from Ford
- Bore size 3.662" utilizing a plasma coated cylinder
5.2L Voodoo Block:
- No support around cylinder (inboard/outboard are in center of cylinder)
- Short 12MM head bolts (pulls on intake galley area)
- Oil filter adapter location has 3 oil holes on side of block
- Bore size 3.700" utilizing a plasma coated cylinder
5.2L Predator Block:
- Factory support webbing added around cylinder (inboard/outboard are in center of cylinder)
- Long 12MM head bolts (pulls deeper in block by main webbing)
- Oil filter adapter location has 3 oil holes on side of block
- Added support webbing from Ford ( More than Gen 3 & 4)
- Bore size 3.700" utilizing a plasma coated cylinder
The 5.2L Predator block is the strongest factory block you can buy. Unmodified & modified it is the strongest factory casting obtainable through Ford.
We offer long 12MM head bolt conversion as well as deck reinforcements to gain more strength for previous generation blocks.
Alright... to much information. Below is the list from strongest to weakest blocks.
- Predator 5.2L
- Gen 3 / 4
- Gen 1 12MM Blocks
- Gen 2 Blocks
- Gen 1 11MM Blocks
Sleeving a Gen 1 or Gen 2 block will make them stronger, add 12MM head bolt conversion, & deck supports and you will have a stout block. The only downfall is the missing webbing that the Gen 3, 4, and 5.2L Predator block has. Still on the fence about which block is best for your build?
